Cynical

Cynical

People will love you, and then they'll break you

People will burn you, and then they'll save you

This world is full of liars and users

Monsters and bullies, snakes and abusers

Manipulators, hollow machines

Narcissistic duplicity

Whatever road you're on people will let you down

But they're not all the same, changing everyday

And you can't live this life walking down the road alone

You've got to have faith in someone

Lovers adore you, and then they scorn you

Lovers will crush on you, and then they'll crush you

This world is full of liars and users

Monsters and bullies, snakes and abusers

Manipulators, hollow machines

Narcissistic duplicity

Whatever road you're on people will let you down

But they're not all the same, changing everyday

And you can't live this life walking down the road alone

You've got to have faith in someone

And as you're walking down the roads of your life

There are thousands of faces that you'll see

How could they all be just hollow machines?

They can't all be as bad as the worst that you've seen

Whatever road you're on people will let you down

But they're not all the same, changing everyday

And you can't live this life walking down the road alone

You've got to have faith in someone

Cynical was our first original song. We wrote it in January of 2020. Although I had written quite a lot of poetry since childhood, I had little experience with putting the words to melodies.

The theme of this song was meant to relate to those so burned by past experiences with other people that they find it nearly impossible to trust. The first video of this song we made for Facebook and YouTube had a tagline referencing ACONs (Adult Children of Narcissists) and domestic violence victims, specifically. But the song is universal to anyone victimized and/or traumatized in some way by relationships to others.

The message is meant to portray the idea that by isolating and distrusting everyone, you actually punish yourself by walking through life alone. And that, no matter how hard it may be, it is nearly vital that we try to find someone we can connect with again, that the odds of everyone you meet being as bad as your abusers is unlikely, and that even some people who used to be toxic can, in time, grow and change, and become someone we can trust once more.
